Dear Market Goers, (if you have trouble viewing this e-mail, click above to view it on website…)
Has this ever happened to you? You wake up one day and you feel so good that you come to the realization that you hadn’t felt very well for a while? Well that just happened to me and after sleeping 12 hours, two days in a row, I feel singin’-out-loud good!
Speaking about singing out loud good, how about The Hot Seats? It was so great to have them come by the market and play after our beautiful Ellen and her Celtic Harp. They were at the Bluemont Concert in Winchester the night before, our market Saturday Morning, the Birchmere on Saturday evening and at Dodona Manor at the Leesburg Bluemont Concert on Sunday night. They were amazing. They were all accomplished musicians and were actually switching instruments while they were playing. And funny! I have their latest album called Retreat to Camp Candy and I’m listening to it right now.
This heat is ridiculous! Come to market early on Saturday…if it gets too hot, we might close a bit early. We are so fortunate to shade (not to mention bathrooms) at our market!! Girl Scout Troop 3707 from Purcellville will selling bottled water to raise money to go on a trip to visit the Girl Scout World Headquarters in Switzerland, so if you get thirsty, please buy some water from these ambitious young ladies. They couldn’t have picked a better market at which to sell water!
You know that our market has great products. The best you can buy anywhere, in fact. This afternoon I ate two of the best peaches I’ve ever eaten from Kilmer Orchards. They were ripened to perfection and so juicy I had to eat them over the sink. Later I had some crackers with marbled cheese from Everona Dairy. Their artisinal sheep-milk cheeses are the real deal. To get anything that good of quality, you’ve got to go to Whole Foods in Reston. This evening I cooked up some zucchini from Singing Frog Farms, sauteed with their onions and Community Garden’s garlic. Then skirt steak, cooked medium rare, from What’s for Dinner Now. Skirt steak has the best flavor..
Two other vendors I want to mention this week are Herban Avenues and Liz Soaps. I’ve been using Liz Soaps for years and I’m not trying to brag or anything but people are always asking me what I use on my skin. Their soap is pure and beautiful and lasts a heck of a long time.
I bought some of Herban Avenues’ bug spray and brought it to an outdoor party this weekend and everyone raved over it because it works AND smells good. In fact, someone from Charlottesville asked if they could have it and I acquiesced. Now I’ve got to buy some more. Another product I recently purchased was their facial lotion with beeswax in it. I gave it to a friend with dry skin and he absolutely loved it.
Remember, any time you spray or rub anything on your body, your skin absorbs it very efficiently. Think about estrogen, nicotine, and morphine patches and how effective they are and then think twice about what you are rubbing into your skin….
Thank you so much to Cindy Vance and Lee Ann Philbin who came to the market and used ingredients from Gonzales Produce, Community Gardens, and Singing Frog Farms to make Panzella Salad. They sent me info on a farmers market contest where you can win $$$$$ and get your recipe published. Will have flyers on Market info table…
Next week, Chef Mark Marrocco from our favorite hometown restaurant, Magnolia’s at the Mill, will be at the market from 10-11 doing a cooking demonstration with foods from the market. I’ll let you know what he decides to cook on our facebook page.
Now for the therapy portion of the newsletter. This one from Hazleden really hit me today:
Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact.
–William James
Many of us learned as children that rejection and abandonment are part and parcel of being alive. We are so used to feeling as though things won’t work out, that fear – like a shadow – is always lurking behind us. Usually there’s something specific to be afraid of – that we won’t have enough money to pay our bills, someone we love will die, or our children won’t do well in school. And always there’s the generalized fear that events will overwhelm us in spite of our best efforts.
We need to be careful about creating what we look for. Regardless of the frightening experiences of the past, we need to believe that other results are possible: All loved ones don’t leave, all risks don’t end in devastation, and all efforts aren’t dashed on the rocks of defeat.
New consequences are possible when we believe they’re possible. The brave new world that each of us seeks stands on the shoulders of that belief.
