Dear Market Goers,
Summertime and the Livin’ is easy! Here’s a little treat for y’all…click on this youtube video of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington performing Summertime and you can enhance your e-mail reading experience!
Boy, is the “eating season” ever under way? Kilmer Orchards has run out of their fabulous peaches two weeks in a row. This week, he willl have yellow peaches (Century) white peaches (Sugar Mae), raspberries, blueberries, cherries, yellow plums (Shiro) and those sweet little Methley plums. He is also sending 5 bushel of canning peaches for customers who have requested them….FIRST COME, FIRST serve on those bushels.
Tomatoes are starting to come in and are fantastic. New this week will be some Ultra Sweet tomatoes from Dog-Leg Farm…low acid, high sugar! Just the way I like them….I made bruschetta last weekend that was to die for and I didn’t even have all the proper ingredients, but when you experience that first vine-ripened, summer tomato, does it really matter? And First AVE Bakery is doing tasty slices of pie and cake. My goodness…what a treat that chocolate cake was with the perfect chocolate leaf on top…
This week, we have Cindy Vance, a personal chef, who will be making a dish for you to sample, from ingredients she obtains from the market. This month is Panzanella Salad with bread from Liberty Hill Farm, tri-color cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and fresh basil. Then on the 30th, Chef Mark Marrocco, from on of my favorite restaurants, Magnolia’s at the Mill, right here in downtown Piurcellville, will be using market products for a demo.
My favorite quote this week is some cowboy wisdom from Louis L’amour, Ride the River. It was interesting to me as my Dad usually read books about history…one of the only fiction authors he read was L’amour.
“Do not let yourself be bothered with the inconsequential. One only has so much time in this world, so devote it to the work and the people most important to you, to those you love and things that matter. One can waste half a lifetime with people one doesn’t really like or doing things when one would be better off somewhere else.”
Sounds like some sound advice to me!

Harvest Market DC - from Chris’ blog…. A Feast for the Senses…..This past week, I started teaching a cooking class at the Fairfax Adult Continuing Education. The cooking classes will feature menus inspired by food markets around the globe. Mercato Orientale in Genoa, Union Square in NYC, Victoria Market in Melbourne, and the 400 year old Marche des Enfants Rouges in Paris. Luckily, I have been to each one. Geographically, these markets are obviously spread across the planet, but there lies within a common thread. To me, the markets are some of the most intriguing, enlightening, energizing and generous places in the world.
They are a window into the soul, history, livelihood, social order of the place they represent. When I’m new to a place, the first thing that I do is go to the market. (dragging my wife along with me!)It is my way of figuring out where am I and how things work. The markets give me insight into what I should be ordering on the menus in the area. Why order beef tenderloin with mole sauce that is Americanized for the tourist when I see the food stall serving it with oxtail or tongue!
Whether it is the 65 year old fish market in Sydney, the Mercado Benito Juarez in Oaxaca, Le Marche des Lices in Rennes, or our very own Penn Quarter, Purcellville, and Palisades market, the markets whet our appetite! And we want to keep coming back for more!
Menu for the week:
