Dear Market Goers,
I hate feeling unorganized and frustrated. And you know what frustrates me to no end? MOVING! I just moved to a larger place (a good thing) and have the most wonderful, generous, caring landords (a great thing). They even come to the market (how smart are they?) and I’m still frustrated and crazy. Now that I’m writing this, I’m trying to become all “zen-like” and not get aggravated that everything is out of place and that there is no art on the walls (ugh) and I can’t remember which drawer or cabinet anything is in the kitchen (where’s the sledgehammer?) and now have concluded that I have Alzheimer’s (panic).
The worst part is, when I’m stressed, that’s exactly when my body needs to exercise and eat right and that’s when I start doing the opposite. So I’m trying to get back on track. Lately, there have been too many french fries and home fries in my life and not enough exercise! It feels so good when I do things that are good for my body and mind. This week, I’m going to check my referigerator and make a list so I have the best, local, fresh, healthy food available for me and my kids all week long!
And those frustrating thoughts seque right into my favorite thought from Hazleden this week:
Going with the Flow
Go with the flow.
Let go of fear and your need to control. Relinquish anxiety. Let it slip away, as you dive into the river of the present moment, the river of your life, your place in the universe.
Stop trying to force the direction. Try not to swim against the current, unless it is necessary for your survival. If you’ve been clinging to a branch at the riverside, let go.
Let yourself move forward. Let yourself be moved forward.
Avoid the rapids when possible. If you can’t, stay relaxed. Staying relaxed can take your safely through fierce currents. If you go under for a moment, allow yourself to surface naturally. You will.
Appreciate the beauty of the scenery, as it is. See things with freshness, with newness. You shall never pass by today’s scenery again!
Don’t think too hard about things. The flow is meant to be experienced. Within it, care for yourself. You are part of the flow, an important part. Work with the flow. Work within the flow. Thrashing about isn’t necessary. Let the flow help you care for yourself. Let it help you set boundaries, make decisions, and get you where you need to be when it is time. You can trust the flow, and your part in it.
But one thing I’ve been doing lately is taking advantage of the young, sweet zucchini offered by Gonzales Produce. Joaquin, the owner of Gonzales Produce will be at the market this week to meet his customers and to answer any questions you may have about his fantastic farm out in Montross, VA….. Here’s my breakfast recipe:
Cut up some of Lothar’s bacon or part of your favorite Lothar’s sausage and put it in a frying pan along with a sweet, young zucchini from Gonzales. This morning I added some leftover onion and tomato I had from the night before and add salt and pepper. Cook it on med low and cover. Go take a shower and check on it when you’re done! Stir it around, and cook until you like the texture. Then put two or three eggs in a bowl and scramble them and pour it over the zucchini-sausage mixture. Put the cover back on and cook until the eggs is cooked through. It is DEELISH!
Here’s some random market thoughts: Weren’t Kilmer’s plums and peaches to die for? My tastebuds were so happy that Everona Dairy is back. That cheese is some of the best on the planet! Micaela is taking a rest after some difficult family issues and will be at the market in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, South Street Under will be providing baquettes and ciabbatta for our customers….
Ellen James and Jake and the Burtones will be at the market this week. I love having music at the market…feed your soul with some great, down-to-earth, traditional music and feed your body with some great, down-to-earth, local foods!
Many of you take photos of the market…here’s a contest you might be interested in…
