Dear Market Goers,
Ahhhh, the last day of school. Summer has truly arrived. A day that both students, teachers, and parents treasure. A day to celebrate freedom from suffocating rules, lines, homework, and early rising…except for those foolish enough to sign up for swim team! Last night, some friends of mine had their 10th annual (at least) end-of-school pool party. It’s a tradition that the kids as well as the grownups treasure. I get to see the bestest of my best friends whom I love so dearly. It is such a comforting, grounding, warm feeling to to hang out with them and the luckily, I know that deep in my heart, they just accept and love me ….flaws and all!
This is my favorite quote this week, from the Hazledon.org website ….
Fine friendship requires duration rather than fitful intensity. –Aristotle
Many of us need to learn how to be in a relationship. We have to give up ideas that a friendship is an intense connection or a conflict-free blending of like minds.
A meaningful friendship is a long-term dialogue. If there is conflict or if we make a mistake or fail to do what our friend wants of us, we don’t end the friendship. We simply have the next exchange to resolve the differences. Our dialogue continues over time, and time – along with many amends – builds the bond. With it develops a deepening sense of reliability and trusting one another. When we have lived with our friend(s) through many experiences – we gain a feeling that we really know him or her in a way we could never have in a brief intense connection.

Happy Father’s Day to all you fathers out there!!!! Miss you Dad…
A friend asked me to let our customers and vendors know about a food film that is premiering in Washington DC this week:
World Premiere of Farmageddon Comes to Three Cities
First Time Documentary Filmmaker Fights for Small Farmers
Washington, D.C. –June 10, 2011–If the FDA wasn’t defensive before about their raids against multiple small farms around the country, they soon will be when Kristin Canty’s documentary film Farmageddon–the Unseen War on American Family Farms debuts this month in three major cities–DC, LA, NYC.
The epicenter of bureaucratic and regulatory power, Washington, DC, is the first stop for the film. It opens here on June 17 for a weeklong World Premiere at the West End Cinema on 23rd Street, NW (between M and N streets). The filmmaker will be in town for the multiple events being coordinated around the film by groups such as Slow Food DC, Keep Food Legal, Grassfed on the Hill, and the Weston A. Price Foundation. Tickets go on sale at the West End Cinema box office, June 14, 2011.
A first time filmmaker, Kristin is a Massachusetts mom whose 4 year old son was healed of multiple allergies by adding farm fresh (raw) milk to his diet. She grew increasingly alarmed at the state and federal government’s armed raids of farm buying clubs and health food coops around the nation. In particular, the targeting of the very food that restored her son to perfect health, roused this mother of four children, to document on film the harsh actions against family farms.
Farmageddon tells the stories, in the words of the victims themselves, of the numerous trespasses of the health bureaucrats on farmers and consumers civil liberties. Canty also interviews experts on health and nutrition and leading local foods advocates to give a sobering assessment of the plight of farmers who seek to meet the growing demand for healthy, ecologically grown food. Congressman Ron Paul makes a cameo appearance decrying government’s overreach into the health and diet decisions of American citizens.
Kristin Canty is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, a nutrition education and activist group, as well as the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. It was while hosting a fundraiser in her home for the latter, that she was inspired to undertake the making of the film. Her goal was to let the honest farmers whose food had harmed no one, tell their side of the story.
The D.C. premiere runs from June 17 through June 23rd. Showtimes for are weekdays 3, 5, 7, 9:00pm, and weekends 1, 3, 5, 7, 9:00pm. For tickets, contact West End Cinema, located at 2301 M Street NW Washington, DC 20037, the box office phone number is 202-419-3456.
The Weston A. Price Foundation is a non-profit nutrition education foundation dedicated to restoring nutrient-dense foods to the human diet through education, research and activism. The Foundation is spearheading a national campaign to educate consumers about the benefits of farm fresh milk from pasture-raised dairy animals. Please visit their website westonaprice.org or realmilk.com to learn more about the Foundation’s Campaign for Real Milk.

As the summer heats up, bugs and diseases in our gardens are also getting very active. Although it can be frustrating to see some of your crops fall to ruin, the best approach is to first learn what the issue is, and then address it. Use care when deciding if you are going to insecticides. Hand picking is often the best and most effective method to controlling pests. If you do choose to spray, consider using an organic option. Make sure to read the label and use proper protective measures.
To first determine what your issue is, check out these resources:
1. Pest and Disease Detective tool- This is an online tool from the Gardeners Supply Company. I like that you can choose either the vegetable or the damage to help narrow your search.
2. Identifying Diseases by Vegetable – A good identification resource that includes pictures.
3. General Pest and Product Resource- Garden’s Alive provides a great line of organic pest solutions. Their site also gives you the basics about what your pest is, and how to treat it.
So first arm yourself with information, then make the decision on what to do.
Remember, it is easy to react when dealing with pests and diseases. Before overreacting, make sure you first do your research, identify the true issue, and then address it. This way you will be armed in the future if it happens again!
