Dear Market Goers,
I ate out at restaurants twice this week and I just want to confirm that what I’ve reported previously about the quality of food at our market is still absolutely and totally true! You cannot get BETTER, MORE FLAVORFUL FOOD ANYWHERE… I’m talking about salad greens. I’m talking about flavorful steak and chicken. I’m talking about vegetables, fruits, breads, chips, cookies, baked goods, ….even flower bouquets and syrup!…I am once again amazed by the quality of vendors we have at the market…and couldn’t be more proud to represent them…
If you like berries, this is a good week for you. Derek Kilmer called this week and said, “Juanita, I’ve got a ton of berries…do you think your customers are ready for berries?” My reply, “Are you kidding? My customers have been waiting all year for berries to come in. Bring it on!” Raspberries are finally here!
Check out this website called “The World’s Healthiest Foods” and read about some info I found on the health benefits of berries…I’ve copied a few tantalizing details on raspberries but there’s a lot more to be found if you click here.. …http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=39…
Antioxidants Unique to Raspberries Provide Powerful Protection - Raspberries possess almost 50% higher antioxidant activity than strawberries, three times that of kiwis, and ten times the antioxidant activity of tomatoes, shows research conducted in the Netherlands and published in the journal BioFactors.
The biggest contribution to raspberries’ antioxidant capacity is their ellagitannins, a family of compounds almost exclusive to the raspberry, which are reported to have anti-cancer activity. Vitamin C contributes about 20% of the total antioxidant capacity, accounting for up to 30 milligrams in 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of fruit. Raspberries anthocyanins, especially cyanidin and pelagonidin glycosides, make up another 25%. And more good news: freezing and storing raspberries does not significantly affect their antioxidant activity, although in this study, their concentration of vitamin C was halved by the freezing process.
I just finished dinner and I’m sitting at the computer and just read what Local Fare (our new breakfast burrito/taco vendor) just wrote and I’m hungry all over again! I can’t wait until Saturday….reading this has made me hungry: AGAIN. Just like the rest of our vendors, Local Fare takes a lot of pride in what they do…just read their market news for this week below and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Here’s my favorite thought for the week, by Elizabeth Lesser…it reminds me to relax:
When I look at the pinched faces of television evangelists or the rigid bodies of angry activists marching in mobs, I want to take them aside and rub their shoulders, wipe the furrows from their brows, feed them something delicious and make them laugh. I want to say, “It doesn’t have to be so intense, so fierce, so acrimonious. You can work to ease the ills of society, and at the same time you can love the world with all of its sorrow and beauty. You can serve your Higher Power without being so uptight about it. You can feel the simple rapture of being alive and let that rapture be your North Star. You can be led by a quiet joy.”

And THANK YOU to those of you who donated to the Purcellville Community Market’s grassroots effort to raise funds to finish up The Last Hardware Store, a beautiful documentary about one of our hometown treasures, Nichol’s Hardware. I promise to keep you updated with progress on the film and when the next showing will be…Sarah, Drew, and Peter have been working hard on polishing the film and making it fit for the big time… I can’t wait to see all the PCM customers names in the credits…I think it’s sweet to see how many people cared enough to make a gesture showing their recognition, appreciation, and support of the importance of preserving one of Purcellville’s oldest and finest institutions and preserving that memory for generations.. Makes me very proud…’cause if you shop at our market, you care not only about good food, but chances are, you value community too.
Thanks to our fabulous musicians, Ellen James, on Celtic Harp and vocals, Will and Sean – The College Guys, and Will Leigh, local high school troubadour. We sure do appreciate your contribution to the market atmosphere…it’s such a treat! This week will be Jake and the Burtones….can’t wait to hear them!
Here are the AMAZING vendors who will be at the market this week….
Local Fare -
Local Fare is a family owned food vendor whose mission is to introduce innovative cuisine concepts of California to Western Loudoun. Local Fare accomplishes this by using a variety of local ingredients that gives traditional market foods a healthy and fresh twist. As a result, all of our menu items are one of a kind for this area.
This weekend, Local Fare will be serving its signature breakfast burritos. Market customers will have their choice of local eggs or egg whites with toppings that consist of sausage, black bean, green chiles, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese with basil, cheddar and pepperjack cheese. The eggs are served in flour or multigrain tortillas. Beginning this week, customers will have the choice of having their burritos topped with arugula from Community Gardens at the Purcellville Community Market.
In addition, Local Fare will debut its BUTTERMILK FLAX PANCAKES. These are homemade pancakes from scratch that are healthy and delicious. For lunch, Local Fare will serve its signature L.A. Korean/Mexican Fusion style tacos. Market customers will have their choice of beef, chicken or pork. In preparation, Local Fare personally hand cuts its own meat. The meat is then marinated for 24 hours in a savory blend of spices that makes it’s meat taste tender, flavorful, and delicious. All oure tacos are served on warm corn tortillas and topped with Local Fare’s special spicy sauce and a Napa cabbage/romaine lettuce slaw with sweet onions, Serrano peppers, and cilantro.

As the summer heats up, bugs and diseases in our gardens are also getting very active. Although it can be frustrating to see some of your crops fall to ruin, the best approach is to first learn what the issue is, and then address it. Use care when deciding if you are going to insecticides. Hand picking is often the best and most effective method to controlling pests. If you do choose to spray, consider using an organic option. Make sure to read the label and use proper protective measures.
To first determine what your issue is, check out these resources:
1. Pest and Disease Detective tool- This is an online tool from the Gardeners Supply Company. I like that you can choose either the vegetable or the damage to help narrow your search.
2. Identifying Diseases by Vegetable – A good identification resource that includes pictures.
3. General Pest and Product Resource- Garden’s Alive provides a great line of organic pest solutions. Their site also gives you the basics about what your pest is, and how to treat it.
So first arm yourself with information, then make the decision on what to do.
Remember, it is easy to react when dealing with pests and diseases. Before overreacting, make sure you first do your research, identify the true issue, and then address it. This way you will be armed in the future if it happens again!
