You know how I just go on and on about Purcellville and how much I love our little town and all the quirky and unique things about it? Now you politely respond, “Why no, I’ve never noticed that, please, do go on.” Well, I have something to share with you that I feel is REALLY unique and REALLY special and that is worth an investment from our community. Have you heard about the new film about Nichol’s Hardware that is being made by some really talented local folks from Lincoln?
The Last Hardware Store is a film created by local photographer Sarah Huntington, along with Drew Babb and Peter Buck. Now everyone knows who Sarah Huntington is….just the most fabulous and talented photographer in the whole, wide world! I remember 20 years ago when I first moved here, she had a storefront in downtown P’ville. I can’t tell you how many times I’d park downtown to pick up something up at Nichol’s and would pass by her storefront and stop. Mesmerized.. There were two photos: one of her beautiful basset hound’s face, sandwiched between the faces of two young, beautiful, earthy girls’ faces, just grinning away….the ultimate picture of best friends forever. And another of a child in a shift balancing on top of a bareback horse. To me, it captured a time forgotten. It was the antithesis of the photos you saw of kids leaning stiffly against fake white picket fences, framed by fake plants. And don’t get me started on some of those Realtor pictures…..
Anyway, Sarah and her cohorts are making a film about Nichol’s Hardware. She recognized quite a while ago that Nichol’s is a very special place. A piece of living history. When the rest of Loudoun started going the way of big box stores, she started trying to capture the essence of an old way of doing business and started photographing and filming the store and it’s employees.
What will this film do and why is the essence of Nichol’s Hardware’s worth preserving? Glad you asked!!!
“To provide Purcellville and the surrounding community a place to buy nutritious, healthy, fresh, local food; to enable farmers to obtain fair prices for their products; to educate the public about food nutrition and preparation; and to create a figurative “town square” where people in the community reconnect with their neighbors as well as the people who work the land and produce food.
So how can we help?
The Lincoln Studios is looking for sponsors who can help cover some of the post production costs that include creating an original music score and final color and audio editing. The Lincoln Studios team has not received any compensation for this project, but there are these other costs that need to be covered.
I have made a donation on behalf of Purcellville Community Market for $100 and am starting a grass-roots effort among our market-goers to collect donations of $25-$100 to help finish this film. If you think this film is a worthwhile endeavor, come and see me at the market. I’m sure I’ll bug you so RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. And by the way, if you donate, your name will be in the credits!!!!

Liberty Hill Farm provides pastured raised chicken, free range eggs and freshly ground whole wheat breads.
Our pasture-raised chickens are raised on fresh grass and non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) feed. Fresh grass is extremely good for the chickens and contribute to a good taste and nutrition to the consumer.
Free range eggs are very healthy for you as they create the “perfect food”, providing a perfect balance of Omega 3 and 6. Our chickens are enjoying the Springtime grass.
Our organic whole wheat products include: freshly ground whole wheat bread, pizza crusts, apple cinnamon bread, cinnamon raisin bread and chocolate chip cookies. We also provide apple cinnamon, cinnamon rolls and granola. Our product provides a couple of characteristics that are beneficial to you: organic and freshly ground. Organic wheat can’t have pesticides used on them or in the ground where they grow. The benefit to you is that you don’t have chemicals going into your organs which is obviously not good for you. We freshly ground our wheat before we bake–thus preserving the best nutrition for you. Any type of flour found in packages in stores have been robbed of 25 to 30 vitamins/minerals in order to allow the flour to last for a very long time. This is good for the flour business but is extremely bad for you.
Visit our website at www.LibertyHillFarmVA.com to get more information about our products or to place orders for market pickup. See you at the market!

Chris Carey, of HarvestMarket, will be at the market this week..Here’s his blog posting:
One of the images that most exemplifies the city of Paris is that of a homey, soft lighted bistro. Dominated by a vast zinc bar, waiters in long white aprons, and the aromas of roast chicken and garlic perfuming the air. The cuisine is rustic, savory, and served generously. “La vie en rose” of Edith Piaf soothes your ears. It is a simple modest place where patrons and clients “tutoyer” each other. For many, bistro dining is the happiest and most cherished memories of the City of Light.
The origin of bistro or bistrot is difficult to define. One common explanation from Napoleon’s defeat of Waterloo in 1815 has Russian soldiers quickly filling the city’s cabarets and shouting “Bistro!Bistro! or “quick, quick.” Another explanation is that the word evolved from the progressive slang of the noun mastroquet, barkeeper, into bistroquet, then bistrotier, one who keeps a bistrot.
The allure of the bistro will always be its deep satisfying, down-to-earth cooking. The tangy vinaigrettes, the earthy ragout, soul enriching daubes, crispy duck fat fried potatoes, the creamy pot au creme. The menu reflects what is best in the market today and cooked simply. Les Halles at its best.
“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”-Hemingway.
I agree Paris and rue Fondary will be with me for the rest of my life!!!
