Defending an Old Friend…

Dear Market Goers,

Evarona Dairy Customers

I’ve just got to this off my chest…it’s been bothering me for a long time!  It’s about a dear old true friend of mine that has been so good to me over the years that I feel the need to defend from the onslaught of bad press and naysayers…yes, that would be my friend, the egg.

The debate over the years is whether the egg is your friend or foe.  I assure you that fresh eggs are your friend!  And factory eggs ain’t.

Eggs from hens raised on pasture, as compared to commercially raised factory farm eggs, contain more of the GOOD stuff and less of the BAD stuff:

Fresh Eggs contain less “Bad Stuff”

  • 1⁄3 less cholesterol  (277 mg vs 423 mg)
  • 1⁄4 less saturated fat (2.4 g vs. 3.1 g)

Fresh Eggs contain more “Good Stuff”

  • 2⁄3 more vitamin A (792 IU vs. 487 IU)
  • 3 times more omega-3 fatty acids (.66 mg vs. .22 mg)
  • 3 times more vitamin E (3.73 mg vs. .97 mg)
  • 7 times more beta carotene (79.03 mcg vs. 10 mcg)

Eggs are one of the few natural food sources of Vitamin D, which many of us do not get enough of because we don’t spend much time outdoors, and even when we do we slather on sunscreen that blocks the production of vitamin D. Pastured eggs have anywhere between 4 to 6 times as much vitamin D as your average supermarket egg.

And personally, I eat fresh eggs ALL THE TIME…along with pastured meats from Lothar, What’s for Dinner Now, Chicama Run, and Liberty Hill.  So what has that done for my cholesterol?  I just got my results back and this year, my HDL (good) Cholesterol has actually climbed above my LDL (bad) cholesterol! “Impossible!” you say, “She must be a freak of nature”.  Well, that point is debatable, but I attribute my amazing cholesterol to the good, pure food I put in my body:  I eat very little processed food.  I do recognize that genetics have something to do with my low cholesterol (as well as my low blood pressure), but you can screw up your genetics by abusing your body with bad fuel and inactivity!

So buy your fresh eggs at our marketLiberty Hill has plenty of fresh eggs as their hens are laying like mad. And they purchased even more layers that will start laying in the Spring.

We’ve got more great news for our customers!  As I mentioned last week, we are welcoming Herban Avenues to the market.  They will have Herbal teas with spice, mint, and fruit choices, as well as teas for cold/flu.  They will also have  Balms, Creams, Lotions, scented bath items;  herbal seasoning blends to add to soups, dips, roasting meats.  Everything you need to get through a cold/dry winter season.  What a great addition to our winter market!

And you’ll never guess who is back…Betty’s Salsa!  She changed jobs and has moved twice but she’s back and raring to go.  This week she will have the best chips ever made, delectable salsas and those to-die-for chicken enchiladas!!!  I CAN’T WAIT!!!!

And Boy, do we have some great music on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…Ellen James on Celtic Harp, Janet and Julia from 10-11, Mucho Gusto starts at 11 and the Samuel and Treasure Matich will be playing their violins for us too!  Music upstairs and downstairs this week…

The kids from Woodgrove and Loudoun Valley High Schools will be at the market again this week collecting gently used jeans for homeless teens …so support the Teens for Jeans drive!

We hope you stop by in all kinds of weather now.  If you’re coming from the east, it’s just the first right past the town hall and then up the block on your left.  Look for the signs.  Don’t forget, there is parking in the town lot down the street and also behind It’s BazaarDon’t park in the little parking lot between Nichol’s Hardware and It’s Bazaar.  We want to be good neighbors to our favorite hardware store!!!  We’ll see you there from 10-1.

Here’s a message from the Matich’s of Liberty Hill Farm:

We will be selling pasture raised chicken, free range eggs and whole wheat products. Our chicken is offered as a  whole, skinless boneless breasts and in parts.   We also provide chicken livers, necks and feet.   Our free range chickens, in addition to the grass they forage for, eat non-GMO (Genetically modified) feed.  GMO grains are polluting our food supply.  Not many places offer this kind of feed–we travel 2 hours to obtain it in order to produce the best products we can.    Free range eggs are very healthy for you as they create the “perfect food”, providing a perfect balance of Omega 3s and 6s. Confined chickens mess up this perfect balance of Omegas and actually produce eggs that are not as healthy for you.

Our organic whole wheat products includes:  freshly ground whole wheat bread, pizza crusts, apple cinnamon bread, cinnamon raisin bread and  delicious chocolate chip cookies.   We also just introduced apple cinnamon and cinnamon rolls.   Stop by Liberty Hill Farm’s table to buy your eggs, chicken and whole wheat products or just to visit (isn’t it great to be inside during these cold days).  We do enjoy the conversations.   You may visit our website at www.LibertyHillFarmVA.com to get more information about our products or to place orders for market pickup.   See you at the market.

If you’re jonesin’ for one of  The Smoothie Guy’s (Mike Schreiber) fresh fruit smoothies, don’t forget he’s at the Purcellville Sports Pavilion in his Smoothie Hut.  Just walk in, even if you’re not a member, and order one of those fantastic smoothies…he’ll be back at the Best Little Market in Loudoun when the weather gets warmer..

Magnolia Girls - Erica won’t be back at the market until February because she will be having her gall bladder removed!  Say a prayer for our dear friend….

hey! The Purcellville Community Market is a friend to all! We so applaud Juanita, who has graciously let our teens set up a table for our important Teens for Jeans drive. I have a new budgeting idea and mantra in my life…….Instead of going to the outlet mall and buying things that I really don’t need, I bring my money every Saturday to the market and buy wonderful food, made with love and other natural, healthy ingredients…..!! Not only am I enjoying the market vendors, but I am seeing lots of friends from the community and tapping my foot to the fabulous musicians. Is there a better place to be on a Saturday? I don’t think so….Thanks for all the fun, food and fun…..and the food.
