Two Awesome New Vendors This Week!

Dear Market Goers,

I am compelled to start this e-mail with my latest food experience….

Every evening this week I have opened my refrigerator door and stared longingly at the marinated Schwencksteaks I bought from Lothar last Saturday, wondering to myself, “When will be the right time to honor those beauteous, local, sacred artisan forms of sustenance?”  Well, tonight was the night.

I took them out of the fridge, took them out and put them in warm water so they would come to room temperature more quickly.  Half an hour later, I turned the oven to 350 and the burner on med-hi.  I added olive oil to my cast iron skillet and waited until the oil started smoking and put the three Schcwencksteaks (pork chops) in the oil where they seductively called out to my olfactory!  I cooked them for a couple of minutes on each side, then slid them into the oven and inserted the digital thermometer about 10 minutes later.  When they hit 160 (medium for pork) I  pulled them out of the oven and threwthem on the cutting board and let them rest for 5 minutes.

Wow.  My picky son, Frankie, took one bite and said, “Oh my Gosh”.  Then he got up to get a napkin and I asked him what was wrong.  He said, “I think that is the best steak I ever had”.  And I’ve got to tell you, it was fantastic.  The secret to pork  (and salmon) is not to overcook it!  However, this was much more than that.  The marinade was perfect, the quality of the pork was impeccable.  Frankie (you remember: the picky one) then said, “I can tell this is from Lothar.  He has a distinct style of butchery.”  (Hello?  Where did this culinary aptitude come from?)  When my 17 year old came home a couple of hours later from an away basketball game, we gave him one too.  He was equally blown away.

My point is:  The quality of Lothar’s products is undeniable.  He inspires 13 year old picky eaters.  His skill as a Master Artisan Butcher is unsurpassed and we are so lucky to have him at our market!!!!

Venice Beach?

Boy, did we have some fun last Saturday despite the cold and windy weather! Thank you to the Die-Hard Market Customers for coming out. They’re a tough crowd)..and just as we promised, market was fun and tasty! We got out our fire pit, served free hot cider and Hondo’s coffee, Lothar’s incredible Market BLT and Kate and Meredith’s Grits with even more choices of toppings…they added fresh jalapenos, red peppers, and tomatoes!  My cup of grits had bacon, cilantro, red pepper, jalapeno and an over-medium egg!!!  Then for lunch, Frankie and I split our weekly  Market BLT….can’t live without it…

And if that isn’t exciting enough for you, three new vendors that we have been anxiously awaiting to join our market are definitely starting this week.

Millstone Breads.  Micaela Keene, of Lincoln, (no…not Lincoln, Nebraska, people…the Lincoln that’s right down the road) will be debuting her artisan breads!  She will be bringing cherry pecan scones, multigrain English muffins, baguettes, rosemary/cheese focaccia, walnut fougasse, oatmeal, cinnamon/raisin and raisin challah.

Micaela went to cooking school back in the eighties at L’Academie de Cuisine in Bethesda and worked in restaurants in DC.  She moved out here after she got married and dabbled in catering.  She’s been baking bread for years and would love to have a shop eventually but wants to try out a Farmer’s Market first.  And what better market than Purcellville Community Market!  So please stop by her table and give her a warm, Purcellville Community Market Customer Welcome.

And Samantha of Holy Cow Delivery will be selling her cousin’s (South Mountain Creamery) whole, cream top, 2%, skim, and chocolate milk, fantastic yogurt and yogurt drinks, to die-for cream cheeses, regular butter and honey butter.  We sure have missed them since the Wednesday market ended.  I’m hooked on their milk and butter and Gus and Frank are hooked on the chocolate milk.  It is the best chocolate milk in the entire world…

Caution…This is their first market and they are unsure of how much product to bring, so get to market early if you want the best selection. Our new vendors need to get a feel for the market to figure out what and how much of each product to bring.  So don’t be disappointed if you get to the market late and they are out of something.

We will also have beautiful Christmas wreaths, made by another lovely Samantha, at the market this week…I can’t wait to see them…

I think it’s gonna be a festive market, folks!!!

DON’T FORGET…NEW HOURS ARE 10-1.

Well, it seems that we NOW HAVE THE PERFECT MARKET!   Let’s face it, we’ve got everything you need….hmmmmmmm……well, maybe not……we have another new vendor starting next week….And he’s selling firewood!  How hot is that?

Here’s who else is going to be here this week:

Judy, maker of Liz’ Handcrafted Soaps, has a message for you:

As I sit at my desk writing this little piece for the weekly Purcellville Community Market newsletter, the wind is blowing outside and rattling around the house. Already I have noticed a piece of our patio furniture turned upside down. The wind can be so nasty when you are out in it — even more so — on a cold day!  I am reminded of how much Ken and I have enjoyed the Purcellville Community Market and all of you. You come despite the weather and support us. For that we are very grateful.

We would like to show our appreciation by offering you a special price when you come this week to purchase your Liz Handcrafted Soap.  Just mention the newsletter and you may purchase five regular-size bars for $20 (yes, you heard that right!) this Saturday, December 4th.  We have over 60 varieties of soap, including several holiday scents and specialty bars, holiday gift bags, western red cedar soap savers and Scruffy’s Bath Bars. We even have little guest-size bars of Orange & Clove for your company to use. Did you know you could also purchase a bar of Christmas soap, carefully slice it into guest-size pieces, wrap a bright ribbon around them and put them in dish (or soap saver) for your guests to use? They will also give your guest bat

hroom a nice, holiday scent. Try the Peppermint Swirl, for example.

We also have Men’s Spicy Lime and Men’s Bay Rum shaving soap ready for those Christmas stockings for that smooth-faced man in your life! This soap allows the razor to just glide over the skin and leave it feeling moisturized and ultra-smooth, not to mention the absolutely manly scent left behind. So come on out Saturday and say hello to Ken. He’ll be glad to see you!

Lothar, of course – Best Butcher in the universe

Liberty Hill Farm will once again be selling pastured chicken, free-range eggs and whole wheat products. Our chicken is offered whole; skinless, boneless breasts; and in parts.   We also provide chicken livers, necks and feet.  It is soup making season and our carcasses, feet, and necks create a rich nutritonal broth.

Our bread is made with organic freshly ground whole wheat flour.  Our selection of organic whole wheat products includes:  freshly ground whole wheat bread, pizza crusts, apple cinnamon bread and cinnamon raisin bread.  Additionally, for the holiday season we have added stuffing mix–made from our freshly ground whole wheat.  As always, we also sell our delicious chocolate chip cookies made with organic freshly ground whole wheat flour and organic chocolate chips.

The season for growing pasture-raised chicken is coming to a close and you may want to stock your freezer for the winter months when pastured raised chicken is not available.   As a side note, we just processed a 10 lb chicken.  If anyone is interested in this chicken for the holidays, just let us know and we will put it aside for you.  Stop by Liberty Hill Farm’s table to buy your chicken and whole wheat products…. or just to visit.    We do enjoy the conversations we have with market customers.
