Dear Market Goers,
Just want to say a few words about the free Flavor Magazines that we give out at the market… What a fantastic magazine about local, artisanal foods and the people who support them. One of my two favorite articles in the latest issue are about Warren Howell, who retired from the county’s Department of Economic Development and how he has been a catalyst for the development of agribusiness in the area. It is an article worth reading and we thank Warren for his service to Loudoun agriculture and role he has played in the development of agribusiness in Loudoun.
And I would also like to say thank you to one of his employees, who just retired. Ann Higgins, who was the “worker bee”; the woman behind the man, who knows every farmer and winemaker around, who publicized all of the Ag events on websites, facebook, newspapers, magazines, created brochures, ads, organized Twilight Tours and Cattlemen’s Association meetings, ..you name it! Who organized every farm and wine tour for years on end and who was the administrator for the Loudoun County farmers markets for years… among her “other duties as assigned”. And those are just the things I am aware of!! And now, we are lucky enough to see her at the market selling mushrooms for F&V Farms!
So if you see these folks…don’t forget to thank them for their service to agriculture in Loudoun County. You have no idea how important their knowledge, enthusiasm, and hard work was to the development of agribusiness which has, thankfully, somewhat preserved the western end of Loudoun County from mass development and encouraged farmers, winemakers, and others to invest in the land.
My other favorite article in Flavor is about one of my pet peeves.. SCHOOL LUNCHES! One line from the article: “We used to be afraid of the Lunch Lady. Now we’re afraid of the lunch”! Pick up a free copy at our market table.
I implore you…please feed your kid’s developing brains and bodies the least amount of processed food you can. Buy them whole milk, whole grain breads, eggs, ethical meats, and fresh fruit. Don’t pay attention to people who want you to feed them skim milk and low fat foods. In general, low fat foods do not satisfy and most people end up eating more of them because their bodies are not satisfied…..
This morning, I packed each child a Honey Crisp Apple from Kilmer Orchards, whole grain bread from Liberty Hill, chunks of Oak Spring Dairy Cheese, a Goat Stick from Chicama Run and a chocolate chip cookie from Liberty Hill. Frankie doesn’t like cheese, so instead, I gave him a sausage from Chicama Run for his protein.
…..which leads me to an announcement that will be finalized next week about four new vendors that will be bringing some much-needed items to our market that will make it a one-stop local shop for your family….can’t wait to bust out that news!!!!
Our beautiful celtic harp player, Ellen James, will be back this week. Thank you, Ellen, for making the market so peaceful and right in the early hours with your harp playing and ethereal vocals.
And check out the article on page 27 and 28 of the Leesburg Today about our market. There’s a sweet picture of Meredith in it, which they forgot to give credit to Dennis Gallus for taking. Thanks to Dennis for that beautiful picture! And thanks to Leesburg Today for recognizing what a special place PCM is!!!!!
North Gate Vineyard will be at the market this week with Loudoun County’s best wines…
Liberty Hill Farms has pastured-raised whole chickens, boneless chicken breasts, quarters, wings, liver, hearts, gizzards and feet as well as home-baked, whole wheat loaves. Love putting butter on one side and grilling in a frying pan…
Chef Eloy’s Kickin’ Salsa’s will be at the market with Mild, Medium, Mango, Xtra Hot, Corn & Black Bean salsa. They are still working on new items to bring to the market and as soon as they have everything in place, you all will be the first to know! Stop by their table tomorrow morning! Just look for the big banner of Chef Eloy!
Here’s to Hardworking Hondo getting to the market on time!!!! We love his coffee, the pickles he sells (not local)…the pickled beets and okra he makes (local)…and we love how sweet, kind and helpful he is to all he meets!
The beautiful, blonde Erica, of the Magnolia Girls, will be bringing lots of goodies to the market this week… Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Macaroons, Snicker Doodles, M&M, and Ginger Cookies! They will also have Key Lime Pound Cake, Strawberry Pound Cake, and Lemon Pound Cake. Pumpkin Bread, Applesauce Cake, and Banana Coconut Pecan Bread, and Pecan Bars will also be available as well as a variety of scones. These are just a few of the delicious treats they have to offer. Be sure to stop for a chat and some free samples. Talk to Erica about special orders!
Message from Lothar: the WORLD’S BEST German, Master, Artisan Butcher.
Dear Valued Customers and Friends of Good Taste,
What gorgeous weather we’ve had this week and it is wunderbar to grill in this kind of weather without all that humidity. We have it covered for your weekend or weekday meals (for those with hearty appetite from back to school ) without having to spend a long time in the kitchen!
First, the special of the week : 14 day air-aged Ribeye Steaks, completely grass fed and grass finished. Basically it can’t get any better when it comes to steaks. single packages, Limited quantity (only 18.5 lbs).
We have 20 different kinds of fresh brats including 5 kinds that need half the cooking time because they have been smoked for close to 18 hours.
We will have the Bacon Treasure Chest full with Center-Cut, Non Nitrate, English, Canadian and Non- Nitrate beef bacon. These bacons are excellent for homemade BLTs for those quick dinner fixers.
We will also have fine meat cut selections of beef, pork and lamb for gourmet dinner without all that labor. Lothar cuts, trims and marinates them as ***** restaurant quality so that you can have more time to enjoy than to labor in preparations.
2 quick meals under 15 minutes
1. Nuernbergers
Brown Nuernbergers in a pan (preferabaly good quality sauce pan) on both sides and take them out on a plate and when cooled cut them to bigger than bite sizes.
Add olive oil and fry minced onions,l ittle bit of garlic, and chopped bell peppers (this is extra, no pepper in the fridge then onion and garlic is good enough).
When onions are translucent add tomato purees or diced tomatoes with some tomato paste, stir well, season if you wish ,and pour the sauce over the pasta of your choice, guten appetit!
2. Chorizos
Brown chorizos in a pan over medium heat so that they will be cooked succulently. Meantime, prepare tortillas, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, cheese, and thinly sliced onions.
When chorizos are finished you can have Taco dinner! Try a dollup of sour cream, it goes well with Chorizo. Yummm…
Thanks for reading this long email and please come out and see us.

Linna the Locavore
The shorter days and cool nights are certainly a sign of the season to come. If you are finished with your garden, remove all dead and diseased debris, and cover your beds with a good layer of chopped up leaves, grass clippings, compost – whatever you can do to add organic ingredients to the soil. If you plan to have a fall garden, you should do the same, but plant your seedlings into these beds and water them thoroughly. Note that Southern States in Purcellville has a few fall crop plants for sale. This week I saw cabbage, lettuce, and kale for sale. If you still have some tomatoes that need to ripen, you may pick them, put them in a box, and cover with newspaper and check them until they ripen. I plan to leave mine on the vine until the first frost warnings come out. Happy Gardening!

Don’t forget to RECYCLE YOUR EGG CARTONS, BERRY CONTAINERS, and WINE BAGS. There’s a basket in the middle of the market where you can put those items and we will give them back to vendors.
Also, Meredith needs GLASS JARS to put her flowers in so customers can take them home in water.
So come out on Saturday, purchase some GREAT food, have a chat with your faithful vendors and happy neighbors, sip some fresh coffee, and/or drink a refreshing smoothie, and have a bite to eat. We will be there from 9 to 1 at the Town Hall Parking lot at 130 E. Main Street in beautiful, downtown Purcellville, VA. Look for the cannon…it’s point’n right at us!!
Happy Eating and dang-it, DEM’S SOME MIGHT UGLY POWERLINES!
