5.12.12

Dear Market Goers,

It’s gonna be a great weekend….all weekend long. I am so excited because there are so many fun things to do here in Western Loudoun this weekend!
Purcellville Community Market is so happy to be open for another year and bringing together all you great folks from the tri-city metropolitan area (Hamilton, Purcellville, and Round Hill) and to you wonderful folks from way far away (Alexandria, Reston, Ashburn) who drive to our market because we really do have the best local products around! We love being here not only because we get to feed people good food, but because we love seeing, talking, and connecting with the genuine, salt-of-the-earth folks that frequent our market.
SO….we are having a Grand Opening Celebration this weekend to celebrate all that and more. A couple of special things we will be offering you this week are free baby trees and a few daylily plants for the Moms out there! You can also enter your name into the hat to win a BIG BASKET OF MARKET GOODS. And for 50 lucky customers, we have a handmade PCM referigerator magnet along with free sunflower seed mix. It’s a fabulous mix with big old sunflowers as well as teeny little sunflowers. Here’s a pic of the varieties included in the mix…schweet!
Then, after you go to market, there’s Purcellville Heritage Day going on this weekend. It looks like it’s really going to be fun this year! AND….there’s the Loudoun Bluegrass Festival. So many good bands, including The Hot Seats, one of my faves! Don’t miss the good music right here at the Loudoun 4-H fairgrounds..check it out here on facebook!
OK…so now I have to brag a little…The musical Once Upon a Mattress was fantastic! All the kids, (disclosure…including my son) were incredible! What voices, what talent! Anyway, here’s a pic of the play…

Here’s some special messages from our vendors!
High View Farms – We’re so excited to be part of the Purcellville Community Market this year! As new vendors, we would like to tell you a little about High View Farms …… originally from the Purcellville area of Loudoun County, we moved to our 197 acre Clarke County farm in 1996 and are an ‘owner operated’ farm. We raise pastured Heritage Berkshire Pork, pastured poultry, pastured free-range eggs and are developing our Heritage Scottish Highland Beef Herd. All of our animals are raised in a natural, humane and stress-free environment. We do not use antibiotics, hormones and all of our supplemental feed is non-GMO. We welcome visitors to our farm through-out the year and have periodic ‘fly-in/drive-in’ events, including a chicken/pig roast featuring our delicious pastured poultry and Berkshire pork!
We had such good response to our ’sausage sale’ last week that we have decided to continue it for the next few weeks. Craig and Karen

Liz Handcrafted Soaps will be at the market Saturday with a full array of great soap for your bathing pleasure. Our soap is made with lots of olive oil and balanced with palm, coconut, avocado and castor oils for a creamy, lathering bar. We also use an ample supply of shea butter in our soap, and your skin will definitely notice the difference. The soapmaker makes no apologies for soap that cleans while leaving behind gentle, natural oils that provide moisture to your skin while allowing it to breathe instead of clogging pores. Stripping one’s skin of natural oils is–well, drying. So if you want “squeaky clean,” we don’t have that kind of soap. If you want natural soap with conditioning oils, then, yes, we have that! See you at the market!
Cornerstone Bakery – People responded really well to our cupcake flavors last week. We will have the same flavors this week which include Banana’s Foster (banana cake with brown sugar buttercream and toffee bits), Espresso (chocolate cake with espresso buttercream), Lemon 3-Ways (lemon cake with lemon curd injection and lemon buttercream), Vanilla Vanilla (vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream) and Chocolate Strawberry (chocolate cake with strawberry buttercream). We will also have delicious Whoopie Pies, Homemade Donuts and Baked Donut Bread Pudding with a Brown Sugar Bourbon Sauce on the side. Of course we will have Doggie Delicious Cookies and Pupcakes for your special four legged friends. If you would ever like to pre-order anything just e-mail me atjoey@cornerstonebakedgoods.com.

Therapy Corner!

God grant me the serentity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference

One of life’s paradoxes is thatin order to change an unwanted situation, we must first accept it the way it is.  If you wish to move forward in your life, first make peace with what you are presently experiencing.  Accepting people as they are is also transformational.  For years, a man tried to get his elderly mother to stop complaining.  One day he gave up trying to change her and accepted her faults.  This experience of unconditional love opened her heart to the point where she stopped condemning herself and others. If there is some area of your life that you are seeking to change, first practice acceptance.

The Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15: When to Buy Organic, and Ingredients to Avoid
May 16, 2012 at LVCC

Find out which fruits and veggies have the highest pesticide content, and which you don’t necessarily need to buy organic. In addition to examining the “dirty dozen” of produce, we will also address the 12 most pervasive and detrimental food additives and substances you can eat. Additives put into processed foods to make them look and taste better, but they contain unhealthy amounts of salt, fat and sugar. As a result, consumers are experiencing side effects, food allergies, increased waistlines, decreased absorption of minerals & vitamins, cancer and more. Please join Hilary Tarkington Stowers, Certified Holistic Health Counselor to help you navigate our food supply, and create the healthiest fridge and pantry for your family!

Food Focus: Greens

Leafy greens are some of the easiest and most beneficial vegetables to incorporate into your daily routing. They are also the vegetables most missing from the American diet. Densely packed with energy and nutrients, they grow upward to the sky, absorbing the sun’s light while producing oxygen. Members of this royal green family include kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, mustard greens, arugula, dandelion greens, broccoli rabe, watercress, beet greens, bok coy, napa cabbage, green cabbage, spinach and broccoli.

How do greens benefit the body? They are very high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous and zinc, and are a powerhouse for vitamins A,C,E, & K. They are packed with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micro-nutrients and phyto-chemicals. Their color is associated with spring, which is a time to renews and refresh vital energy. In traditional Asian medicine, the color green is related to the liver, emotional stability and creativity. Greens aid in purifying blood, strengthening the immune system, improving liver, gall bladder and kidney function, fighting depression, clearing congestion, improving circulation, and keeping your skin clear & blemish-free. Pick up a new green to try this week at the farmers market!
